Ziprasidone is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain. Ziprasidone is used to treat schizophrenia and the manic symptoms of bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 10 years old.
Ziprasidone, sold under the brand name Geodon among others, is an atypical antipsychotic that is used for the treatment of schizophrenia as well as acute mania and mixed states associated with bipolar disorder.[3] Its immediate release intramuscular injection form is approved for acute agitation in people with schizophrenia. Ziprasidone is also used off-label for depression, bipolar maintenance, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).[4] Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, and twitches.[5][6] Although it can also cause weight gain, the risk is much lower than for other antipsychotics.
