Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid is a combination penicillin-type antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu).
Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, also known as co-amoxiclav, is an antibiotic useful for the treatment of a number of bacterial infections.[3] It is a combination consisting of amoxicillin, a ?-lactam antibiotic, and potassium clavulanate, a ?-lactamase inhibitor.[3] It is specifically used for otitis media, strep throat, pneumonia, cellulitis, urinary tract infections, animal bites, and tuberculosis.[3] It is taken by mouth or by injection into a vein.[1] Common side effects include diarrhea, vomiting, and allergic reactions.[3] It also increases the risk of yeast infections, headaches, and blood clotting problems.[1][4] It is not recommended in people with a history of a penicillin allergy.[1] It is relatively safe for use during pregnancy.
